What’ll Make My Christmas Merry.

23 Dec

You’ll be surprised to find out that the stuff that make you tick even at Christmas ticks someone else off. We all have different wish lists. This is the wish list of the love-struck .

What’ll make a peasant’s Christmas merry

Is a great meal and a warm bath.

What’ll make an orphan’s Christmas merry

Is the chance to spend it with his parents.

Living On Borrowed Time

21 Dec

When you own something, you determine exactly what happens to it. How it spends its days and nights, winters and summers. It’s your call every second of the way. It’s your baby anytime every day. But it’s not like that with life…shit happens. And the decision to either smear it all over ourselves, or grab some dettol and smell fresh afresh, that’s what we own…not life. Guest Contributer Nana Oye: Don’t Throw The Baby Out With The Dishwater (literally)

17 Dec

Nana Oye is a long-standing guest blogger of high repute  here on Goldinwords. She’s earned her reputation by virtue of the quality of  work she’s consistently produced. Today, in story format, she takes us through the world of Miss Algae. A world you’re incapable of going through without making some serious adjustment to your own. It’s a bit lengthy, but i can assure you it’ll be worth the read. cheers!

“Miss Algae is a disgrace to this church and the values we stand for. She is pregnant at seventeen with no husband to show. To set an example for other young girls who may be tempted to indulge in pre-marital sex, we, the disciplinary committee of Fear and Trembling International Church, sentence her to six months of community service to the church. She and Brother Sammy, whom she caused to fall, will wear red velvet robes for identification until she delivers, upon which a consecration ceremony will be had for the baby and the parents. They will also talk to the youth every fortnight about the evil and dangers of pre-marital sex” The chairman of the disciplinary committee pronounced.

As I sat there listening to the proceedings, I wanted to jump and scream. I did not attend the church. I was there because Miss Algae is my friend – One of my closest friends. I had come to lend her support. God knows she wasn’t getting any from her parents! In fact, outraged as I was by what she was going through in the name of discipline, it was actually milder than what had happened to her when I had gone home with her to break the news to her family. Her father had slapped her, called her names, and threatened to disown her. Her mother had rolled on the floor screaming, “You have disgraced me and brought all my toils to naught. Araba, you have killed me oo!” You can imagine what that must have done to the scared and pregnant seventeen year-old. Read the rest of this entry »

Premature secret- I couldn’t wait to tell you!

14 Dec

I seriously thought I could keep it under wraps till it was finally done. I’d planned to pull it off without starving goldinwords or you of the weekly refreshing experience that you’ve gotten used to by now. But alas, it’s blood that runs through my veins –not Tampico- lol, and I’m unable to do both at the same time seamlessly.

So if you’ve visited goldinwords in the past week or two and haven’t seen new material being churned out at the usual rate, there’s actually a very good reason for it. And it’s not because the well went dry. Something major is happening behind the scenes, and you’re entitled to know about it.

A couple of months back God gave me a terrrrific idea for a novel. From that day onwards, my hands, laptop and almost all my energy has gone into it. For the first time, I’m going to talk about it publicly here, because the nerve to actually set out on this very ambitious journey couldn’t have come without your several encouraging comments and turn-ups here on goldinwords. So by all means sit back and buckle up. The idea, title and synopsis have been copyrighted already o. Read the rest of this entry »
